Is it a Good Idea to Buy a Used Pool Table?

One way to get really cheap pool tables is to opt to buy used ones rather than brand new ones. But is this a good idea? Are used tables really worth looking into or are you going to find yourself disappointed by the end result if you try?

All a Question of Quality and Maintenance

The good thing about pool tables is that generally speaking there are quite a few second hand tables out there that are in good quality. Because pool is a game where there aren’t many moving mechanical parts, the area that is exposed to most wear and tear is the pool cloth and the pockets at times.

Of course, this all depends on how the pool table was kept and what quality materials were used in its construction.

Cheaper pool tables are generally not worth looking at when they’re second hand. This is because they are mostly made out of wood and resin meshes that tend to warp over time, so you’re likely to find that the playing surface is warped in some areas. If you like you can inspect some of these used tables and see for yourself. On the other hand, more expensive and high quality pool tables are made from thick hardwood slate – and aren’t prone to warping.

As you can well imagine however, even the best pool table could be in rather poor quality if it hasn’t been kept well. If exposed to excessive conditions of heat or cold, and so on – even a high quality pool table could experience problems. That is why it is vital that you check out whatever pool table you’re interested in before you decide to purchase it.

All said and done, a pool table that is in otherwise good quality but might need the pool cloth replaced is generally a good buy. Be prepared for the fact that you might need to spend $100 to $150 replacing the pool cloth, but considering the fact that you should be saving more than that on the table itself – overall you’ll still come out on top.

So long as you do your research and ensure that the table you buy is in good condition otherwise (i.e. not infested with termites, warped, or cracking in certain places) you’ll find that used tables could really offer some pretty good deals.

One of the best places to look for these deals are in any local pool clubs. Otherwise, you could try the classifieds as well as online listings for an idea of where to get started. Remember that if you’re buying a table from another city or state then transportation costs may be pretty high too!
